Many events at IFQ require picture posting of the final project before partner assignments are made. This is a way to avoid the disappointment of being paired up with another participant who has "dropped the ball". After all, we want the IFQ experience to be fun!
Because at IFQ we are always trying to help our members, we have been scouring the web for a picture editing program that is EASY, QUICK and, most of all, FREE. And we've finally found it! IRFANVIEW is a simple picture editing program that will make your iFQ picture posting a breeze! It's so easy to use, you'll have your IFQ pictures posted in no time!
In fact, below, you'll see how very simple this program is. After downloading and installing this program (click here to be brought to IrfanView's download page), here's what you do.
1. Open the IrfanView program. This is the screen you will see.
2. Open your picture file on your computer by clicking on the "FILE" menu and then choose "open".
3. After the file is opened comes the important part. Click on the IMAGE menu across the top and choose "Resize/Resample". This is what you will see.
4. A dialogue box will come up and tell you what size your picture is. The red circles are the important areas you need to check. You will be checking "Set new Size" and "DPI" (which sets the resolution for the picture).
5. Since all pictures posted on the IFQ website must be no taller or wider than 600 pixels, you first look at "Set a new size". (When changing the size, please make sure that the dot by the choice "pixels" is chosen.) You want the largest measurement of the picture to equal no more than 600 pixels. So, in the example above, where you have a width of 1200 and a height of 1600, you would need to change the HEIGHT (since it is the largest measurement) to 600. The width will then automaticallly change. (If the width was 1600 and the height was 1200, then you would change the width.) The size must be 600 pixels or lower.
The next step is to change the resolution which is the DPI box. The box beside DPI must read 72. Be sure that "Reserve the aspect ratio" above DPI is checked.
This is how the above illustration would be changed to create a picture that can be posted in the IFQ galleries.
Notice how the height was changed to "600" (under "Set new size") because that was the largest dimension in the original. When you entered "600", the width automatically changed to 450 to keep the same proportions. You must always check the size of your picture since it mostprobably will have to be sized down.
The DPI is set at 72.
Good, now click on "OK" and then save your picture (under the "FILE" menu, click on SAVE). Try to name it something that makes sense, like "mysteryquilt.jpg" so you can find it later. Your picture MUST be a file that ends in ".jpg", ".jpeg" or ".gif".
Only use letters or numbers in the file name. If you use a symbol like *, or ?, or &, or/, or ', the picture won't post. Only letters or numbers will work.
You're ready to go!
Go to the IFQ picture posting page (you will find the menu link under the IFQ Gallery item on the left menubar) and fill out the form. Then click "BROWSE" by the picture file field and find the picture file on the computer. Choose it and click on "Post my Picture" and you're done!
