Jane Parker, chapter leader of UK-Threads of Time Friendship Quilters, is hosting this event. Here she defines the Art Quilt:

"Art Quilters often prefer to be called Fibre Artists because they use fibre to create their art. Art Quilts are constructed from at least three layers of fabric but they are not designed to lie on a bed and often would not suit that purpose. They are meant to be hung on a wall or displayed as a free-form piece of fibre sculpture."

"Fibre Artists use fibre as their chosen medium; they dye it, paint it, cut it, tear it, stamp it, fuse it, embellish it, and stitch it. The layering of fabrics bring a softness and depth to their work. There are no rules in the World of Art Quilters, apart from the traditional layering, but that does not mean that Art Quilts are an excuse for shoddy workmanship. An Art Quilt should reflect the techniques acquired in traditional quilting but build on these to reflect the meaning/message behind the artist's design."

"Truly, Art Quilters take the art and technique of quilting beyond all borders and boundaries."

If you have questions, or need a little help, Jane will be happy to oblige. Just send her a message or ask in the Art Quilt Forum.

  • You will create a small Art Quilt to exchange with a fellow IFQ member. The size must be 18" in one direction, and may be no larger than 18" in the other direction.

  • Your Art Quilt must have a hanging sleeve or some other type of hanging apparatus.

  • The quilt must be constructed of no less than three layers, as with any quilt.

  • Your quilt must not include any substances restricted by any destination country. For instance, Australia and New Zealand do not permit any wood products to enter their countries, so that would eliminate wooden buttons or beads. Visit the Art Quilt Forum for more discussion about this.

  • This Art Quilt should reflect the essence of IFQ. That is, "Quilting Beyond the Borders". Have fun interpreting this theme using no traditional borders. Use your best creative efforts on your Art Quilt. Use embroidery, painting, piecing, quilting, appliqué, or collage... actually, the sky is the limit!

  • After you sign up for this event you will create your Art Quilt and post a picture of it in the Art Quilt Gallery. The pictures will not be visible to anyone until after all of the exchanges have been completed. It would be a shame to spoil the surprise! You cannot receive the name and address of your recipient until after the picture posting requirement is met. The exchange partners will be revealed after the Picture Posting Deadline of August 2, 2006.

  • Once you know your exchange partner's name and address you will air mail her the quilt. You will receive an Art Quilt from another IFQ member, as well. On August 30, 2006 the Art Quilt Gallery will open so that everyone can see the beautiful Art Quilts created for this exchange.
